If you have ever felt the magic of gliding across the ice on skates, but thought those days were gone since St. George, Utah is in the middle of the desert, take heart. Even though the average winter daily temperatures here in St. George are too warm to sustain a sheet of skateable ice, Cedar City has a solution.
The Glacier Community ice rink, a seasonal outdoor venue operated by the YETI.
Not the YETI of Himalayan fame, the Youth and Enthusiasts Together for Ice of Cedar City, Utah fame. “The goal of our nonprofit organization is to make ice sports and recreation affordable to all, and to bring the opportunity of an ice rink facility to Cedar City, Utah.”
Even if you don’t know how to ice skate, but would enjoy adding the skill to your winter recreation repertoire, Glacier can help with their learn to skate classes on Saturdays 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm.
If you already know how to skate and are thirsting to take to the ice again, Glacier offers public skating. There is a $5 admission for each skate session, with no additional charge for consecutive sessions, and ice skate rentals are $2 for a public skate session (2 hour block).

The Glacier ice rink’s proven technology, Mother Nature, provides an authentic skating experience. When it’s cold enough outside to keep the rink frozen, you can skate. If it gets too warm, the ice melts, and when the weather is truly frightful, the exposed rink may be closed for inclement weather. Beyond the physical benefits, there is something serene about gliding across the ice beneath the backdrop of the majestic Cedar Mountain. Ice skating is fun, healthy, and could be the perfect way to spend a romantic winter evening.
Skating is an excellent source of exercise and entertainment, but there are inherent risks. For your safety, the Glacier Community ice rink encourages you to wear a helmet and protective gear when skating.
When your skate date ends, you will be able to indulge your taste buds with excellent food and beverages within blocks of the rink. Just before the freeway entrance you will have the opportunity to replenish your energy at Applebee’s, Panda Express, Café Rio, Ninja Japanese Steakhouse, Brody’s Mexican Restaurant, Sweet Basil Thai (personal favorite) and other delectable restaurants.
If you are in the mood for some, “Good ole down home American food,” take a short drive up Cross Hollow Road to a local favorite, the All American Diner at 501 S. Main St.
