Staying Healthy During Summer in St. George
Now that summer is upon us, temperatures in Southern Utah are quickly rising to infamous highs. With all the adventures available in the summer, it’s important to remember to stay healthy as you’re out and about in St. George and beyond.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Drinking water is the golden rule to staying healthy during the warm summer months. It’s generally recommended to drink two to four cups of water in the morning and a similar amount before enjoying outdoor recreation and activity. Additionally, it is commonly accepted by both medical professionals and nutritionists that an individual should consume, on average, between two and three quarts of water per day (more in the summer months). So bust out those water bottles and stay hydrated throughout the day!
Exercise and physical activity
Outdoor recreation is one of the best ways to stay active during the summer and the options in Southern Utah are practically boundless. Exploring the multitude of trails, caves and state and national parks around St. George are one way to naturally stay active. Join any of SunRiver’s numerous clubs – from biking and hiking to lawn bowling, stop by the fitness center or hit the pool to start developing a regular workout program.
Shade and sun protection is your friend
Overexposure to the sun’s harsh rays can easily lead to health issues for active adults, so be sure to wear a hat when venturing outdoors and apply SPF liberally (and regularly!). If you do managed to get sunburned by staying outside too long, remember to apply Aloe Vera gel for relief and a faster healing process.
Add antioxidants to your diet
Making changes to your dietary regimen can help combat illness and naturally bolster your immune system as the weather heats up. Particularly, add berries to your diet. Not only are fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, peaches and melons in season, they are also rich in antioxidants that are good for your immune system!
These and other tips are sure to help keep you healthy and active in the St. George heat. What else do you do to stay healthy during the summer? Tell us in the comments below!
