Complete with a fully-stocked convenience store and automatic car wash, the gas station will add convenience to the lives of SunRiver residents and their visiting family and friends. However, despite the company’s memorable name, Terrible Herbst is anything but!

Terrible Herbst Oil Company was originally founded by Ed Herbst in Chicago in 1937. While the business was distinctively family-owned – they even offered pony rides, bubble gum and orchids for kids and customers alike.

In 1950, Herbst opened the very first Terrible’s in Las Vegas. Today, almost 60 years later, Terrible Herbst operates more than 150 service centers throughout Nevada, California and Arizona.

Growing from its origins in the harsh desert landscape of Southern Nevada, Terrible Herbst has remained committed to pairing principles of innovation with environmental impact and social consciousness. Terrible’s Car Wash was the first “green” car wash ever built and operated in Nevada, and the company has been recognized by the Southern Nevada Water Authority for being a uniquely water-smart car wash.

On the philanthropic front, Terrible Herbst maintains active partnerships with the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, known as Safe Place;

HELP of Southern Nevada and various other nonprofit organizations. In particular, the Safe Place program provides a resource not only for homeless youth, but for youth in a variety of crisis situations– from being locked out of the house to riding with an unsafe driver or finding themselves in a dangerous date situation.

Every year during the holidays, the company raises money and organizes a bike drive for the annual 98.5 KLUC Toy Drive. All bikes, toys and money collected go to HELP of Southern Nevada, which, through a network of other nonprofits in town, distributes everything collected to families in need.

Additionally, Terrible Herbst is also home to Terrible Herbst Motorsports, one of the most popular and successful racing teams in the sport today. The passion for racing runs deep in the Herbst family, stretching across three generations. The family’s dedication to the sport is evident, with Terrible Herbst Motorsports having dominated SCORE desert racing and Best in the Desert with numerous wins and multiple championships to the brand’s name.
