The Way We Worked – Special Exhibits, Part 2
Last week, we shared a number of special exhibits currently on display around Washington County and beyond as part of the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling celebration of American labor and innovation titled The Way We Worked. Below is a listing and brief description of even more special presentations involved in the traveling exhibition:
Washington County Works! Trailhead Exhibit
This “trailhead” exhibit gives a taste of the wonderful stories on display all over the county, and is an informative, educational starting point to learn about this collaboration between Washington County, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Archives. Come learn where you can go to find out more! Open every Thursday – Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Silver Reef Museum, 1903 Wells Fargo Rd., Leeds, UT. Exhibition is free with regular museum admission.
Flying Monkeys, Fence Posts and Fighter Pilots
Did you know there is a high-tech aerospace industry hidden up on top of the mesa above Virgin? Come learn about the impact and unusual history of this little-known work story! Located in Old Heritage Town Square – 114 S Mill St. in Virgin, UT. Admission is free.
Artists: At Work in their Studios
The Sears Art Museum will feature a special video presentation of past and current artists working in their studios, located in the Eccles Fine Art Center Grand Foyer. Ancient artists worked to leave behind petroglyphs and pictographs, or created pottery that left us clues to their cultures. Artists such as Thomas Moran journeyed here to capture the spectacular grandeur of our area and Zion National Park. Today, artists move here to be surrounded in the beauty of what we call home. Artists paint en plein air (French for outdoors) to capture the quickly changing light. Others work in their studios, set up in garages, small rooms or spacious and light-filled studios. Without work there is no artwork; no intention of creating; no visual images of people, settings or feelings; no recording of time and change. Gallery director Kathy Cieslewicz says, “They don’t call it artWORK for nothing!” The photo images of this presentation of artists working in their studios reminds us of their labor and contributions. Located inside the DSU Sears Art Museum – 155 S. University Ave. in St. George. Open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Silver Reef: A Beautiful, Substantial Mining Camp
Skilled carpenters and stone workers created buildings in Silver Reef, which made it exceptional for a mining town of its era. Come learn about the craftsmanship that went into the construction of the town of Silver Reef in this special exhibit. While you’re here, explore the many work exhibits in the museum and visit our new “mock mine” exhibit downstairs. Open every Thursday – Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Silver Reef Museum, 1903 Wells Fargo Rd., Leeds, UT. Exhibition is free with regular museum admission.
The Workforce of Our Future
What do you want to be when you grow up? Come explore the many ways kids today might be working in the future! This particular exhibit is especially great for bringing kids and grandkids. Located at the St. George Children’s Museum – 86 S. Main Street in St. George. Admission is free with regular museum admission.
