All American Hot Dogs

We all know and remember singing the catchy, patriotic tune “What’s More American” in grade school. “What’s more American than Cornflakes? The Fourth of July and Uncle Sam.” Though the classroom classic is wonderful and nostalgic, especially Bing Crosby’s rendition, I personally feel that the song has always been missing something. HOT DOGS. What’s more American than hot dogs? Nothing! Just in time for the Fourth of July, we’re upping the ante on this year’s hot dog season with one simple recipe.

Hot dogs are nothing without their main character, the hot dog. Dixie Meats is a full service meat market located here in beautiful St. George. Their all-beef hot dogs are just the right size and thickness, packed with flavor, and are our absolute favorite. To accompany our star dog is a very special sweet and tangy sauce and an assortment of personal favorite toppings. Step aside ketchup, mustard, and relish, there are new condiments in town.

Ingredients:

  • 5 all beef hot dogs

  • 5 hoagie buns

  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 ears corn, grilled and cut off the cob

Sauce:

  • ¾ cup ketchup

  • ¾ cup brown sugar

  • ¼ cup honey

  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon cider vinegar

  • Optional: ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions:

  1. In a small sauce pan over medium heat combine ketchup, brown sugar, honey, soy sauce, onion powder, vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Continue to stir until mixture is almost boiling. Remove from heat and let cool.

  2. Meanwhile, preheat a charcoal or gas grill to medium high heat. Place hot dogs on hot grill and cook for 5-7 minutes until grill marks are on all sides. Remove and set aside.

  3. Place buns on grill toasting each side for 30 seconds or until grill marks appear.

  4. Place hot dogs in toasted buns, smother with sauce, top with grilled corn, green onions, and any other toppings your heart desires. Best served with a side of homemade potato salad.
