Discovering Clubs at SunRiver – Ukulele Circle

If you have heard Hawaiian music, you have heard a ukulele. However, you may not know that the instrument didn’t originate in the islands. The ukulele looks like a little guitar with four strings. It is actually a member of the lute family, and originated in the 19th century in Europe.

The Ukulele Circle meets on the first and third Mondays each month. Members get familiar with and practice about fifty-five songs, and do four show a year. At a typical meeting the group sits around the table, someone will call out a song and they all play.

New members are welcome with no previous ukulele playing experience needed. The group has a couple of loaner ukuleles for new members to try.

It gives you a chance to find out if you like playing.

The group plays guitar style with the ukulele in their lap, and they play chords and strum rather than picking. Meetings are described as more of a jam session. If you are interested in playing or learning to play, just show up.

“If you are going to buy a ukulele,” Pat said, “go for the tenor.” Beginners can start slow and learn basic chords, then join the jam sessions.
