Blueberries

Blueberries are an incredible food, packed with great nutrients and health benefits for our bodies. They are full of antioxidants (helps protect your cells and DNA against damaging free radicals), fiber, potassium (helps keep blood pressure regulated (think diabetes)), vitamin k, vitamin c, manganese, and even copper! Because of this blueberries are a good source of nutrients for your WHOLE body, from head to toe!

According to a study from 2012, Annals of Neurology, it was discovered that regularly eating blueberries resulted in a nearly 2.5-year aging delay, a slower cognitive decline, then those who didn’t regularly eat berries. Robert Krikorian, PH., a professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati, has stated that “Recent human studies from our laboratory indicate that anthocyanins, a subclass of flavonoid polyphenols, are involved in the multiple benefits of blueberries.” The parts of our brains that are responsible for learning and memory benefit from these anti-inflammatory compounds because they can cross the blood-brain barrier.

If you want to save money, buy frozen berries (plus they’ll last longer!) Note: to get the most anthocyanins, purchase organic berries and to get the greatest benefits from these amazing berries; eat them raw! They are so easy to add to everything from cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, snacks, muffins, smoothies, pancakes, jam, salads, and one of our favs: pie and ice cream!
