Team Titleist Shots of the Year: Webb Simpson Edition

December 31, 2012

U.S. Open? Check.

Most important shot of your life? Check.

One of the worst lies you’ve ever seen? Unfortunately, double-check.

This sets the stage for Titleist Brand Ambassador Webb Simpson and his most memorable shot of 2012. As most Tour Players know, there is nothing like the pressure that comes along with playing in a major championship and when it’s the U.S. Open – they know the conditions are going to be extremely difficult on a good day.

In the penultimate group, Webb put on a show of skill, nerves and determination during the final 18 holes at the Olympic Club. After making birdies on holes 6, 7, 8 and 10, he moved into contention and came to the 72nd hole needing Par or better to finish with the clubhouse lead.

After a solid drive, his approach shot landed just off the green but when he made it greenside, he found his Pro V1x in a rather tricky lie that would set up a difficult up and down.

“I get up there and the lie is so unique. It’s an old drain but there is no drain cover under it. It’s just dead grass,” said Simpson. “The most important shot of my life I’m facing and it’s one of the worst lies I’ve ever seen.”

So what was Webb thinking? He just wanted to keep it simple.

“If I execute the technique right on my chip and I land it in this area, about a three foot area it’s going to be good.”

It was really good. One chip and a putt later, Webb was in the clubhouse with the lead and, with his wife by his side, watching the final group come in. After the last putt dropped, nobody was able to match Webb’s score and he was now able to add U.S. Open Champion to his resume.

Hear what Webb had to say in the video above and check out some more of our Team Titleist Shots of the Year below.

Team Titleist Shots of the Year: Zach Johnson Edition

Titleist Brand Ambassador Zach Johnson’s victory at John Deere Classic turned out to be anything but routine.

After four rounds of solid play at TPC Deere Run, Zach, the local favorite, found himself in a playoff with fellow Pro V1x loyalist Troy Matteson. On the first playoff hole, both players found the water and ended up making bogeys to force another hole of sudden death.

While Troy found the middle of the fairway with his tee shot, Zach ended up in a fairway bunker with 195 yards left to the hole.

“I hit a 6-iron, just a good full backswing with an abbreviated follow through. And just tried to get down on the golf ball,” said Johnson. “It landed middle of the green, maybe towards the back third… and released obviously quite a ways after it ricocheted off the bank.”

Once his Pro V1x settled, Zach sent his putt to the bottom of the cup to capture the title and cap his most memorable shot of 2012.

“When you had to execute a shot in a difficult circumstance, especially when your opponent is in the middle of the fairway. That’s the one that stands out,” said Johnson.

Watch the above video to hear Zach’s take on the shot.

Stay tuned for our next installment of the Team Titleist 2012 Shots of the Year and check out some of the earlier highlights below.

The high winds at the Australian Open may have caused some delays, but for Pro V1 loyalist Peter Senior it was well worth the wait. Battling the challenging conditions, Senior closed with an even par 72 to finish with a 4-under 284 victory total, becoming the oldest champion (53 years old) in the history of the Australian Open. The win was his first since the 2010 Australian PGA Championship.

Joining Senior in the winners’ circle, Pro V1x loyalist Ariel Cañete took home top honors at the Olivos Golf Classic and claimed his second victory of the season on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica.

2248.BALL 5F00 COUNT Senior and Cañete Find Winners Circle with Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x Golf BallsTitleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x players have now won 188 times across the worldwide professional tours in 2012, more than seven times the nearest competitor with 25 and more than all competitors combined.

Senior, a native of Australia and a regular on the Champions Tour, had 10 top-10 finishes this year, but no wins. The win was even more special for Senior as he was able to share the experience with his son Mitch.

”It doesn’t get any better than this,” Senior said. ”We’ve had three years on the Champions Tour where Mitch has caddied for me for the last two years.  We’ve lost three playoffs, so it feels unbelievable to win with him on the bag.” (Click here to watch the Golf Channel Tour Report)

As for the conditions, Sunday morning featured wind gusts that topped 50 mph – causing one television tower to fall – and players also were greeted to golf balls that struggled to come to rest on the fairways and greens as the wind howled.

“It was probably one of the toughest days I’ve ever seen on a golf course,” said Senior.

Titleist was the top choice of more players in the Australian Open field of 156 in the golf ball category with 116, nearly six times the nearest competitor with 20.  Nine of the 13 players who finished among the top 10 and ties relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success.

PGA TOUR LATINOAMÉRICA: Ariel Cañete led a Titleist Pro V1x 1-2-3 finish at the Olivos Golf Classic where he posted a pair of 4- under par 67s on Sunday en route to a come from behind win.  Cañete finished with a 9-under-par 275 victory total to earn his second title on the 2012 Latinoamérica Tour and seventh top-10 finish in the tour’s first year.  A first round weather delay pushed play back a day and the final 36 holes were played on Sunday.

Clodomiro Carranza and Jose Cóceres, who relied upon the new Titleist Pro V1x prototype golf ball, shared second place, two shots behind Cañete.

Titleist was the top choice of 121 players, more than seven times the nearest competitor with 16.

Team Titleist Shots of the Year: Louis Oosthuizen Edition

December 7, 2012
December 7, 2012

Albatross. Double-Eagle. No matter which name you prefer, it’s no doubt one of the rarest scores in golf.

Add in a dash of excitement from The Masters, along with a pinch of the awe-inspiring surroundings found at Augusta National Golf Club, and you have the recipe for Louis Oosthuizen’s most memorable shot of 2012.

After driving his Titleist Pro V1x in the fairway on Augusta National’s second hole, Louis looked down at his golf ball, situated on a downhill lie, 265 yards from the green.

Most golfers in that situation think about where to lay up. Louis’ sights were set on the green. Make that the flagstick.

He pulled his 4-iron, took aim, and the rest is history.

“The ball did exactly what I wanted it to do. It came out (with) a nice strong flight. And pitched front edge which we were playing for,” said Louis. “Then the green did all the work from there.”

Did we mention it was Masters Sunday?

The exact odds of making a double-eagle (or albatross) are a little unclear. Some say it’s as high as 6 million-to-1. More modest estimates come in around 1 million-to-1.

One thing we can all agree on: Louie’s shot is definitely a highlight of 2012.

Watch the video above to hear what he had to say and stay tuned for our next installment of the 2012 Team Titleist Shots of the Year.

First contested in 1904, the Australian Open is one of the oldest and most prestigious events across the worldwide professional tours.  The list of winners on the Stonehaven Cup is a who’s who of some of the most prolific names in the history of golf.

The tournament is also near and dear to a contingent of Australian golfers who are now members of the PGA and European Tours, but annually return to their roots to compete for their national championship.

Team Titleist caught up with six former champions who are participating this week, including each of the last three winners – Greg Chalmers (2011, 1998), Geoff Ogilvy (2010) and Adam Scott (2009) – all of whom just happen to be full product line Titleist Brand Ambassadors.

Team Titleist Shots of the Year: Rickie Fowler Edition

December 4, 2012

(Please visit the site to view this video)

When it comes to memorable shots, sticking an approach shot during a sudden-death playoff that ultimately leads to your first PGA Tour win would definitely fit the bill for most of us.

And for Pro V1x loyalist Rickie Fowler, it certainly stands out as his shot of 2012.

After making par on the final hole of regulation at the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship, Rickie secured a spot in a three-way playoff, stepped back up to the 18th tee at Quail Hollow, split the fairway with his Titleist Pro V1x and put himself into position to close out the tournament.

What happened next?

“I had a good number, and I was aiming right of the hole with the wind coming out of the right, and if I hit a perfect shot, it comes down right on the stick,” Rickie said. “I hit a perfect shot at the right time.”

After sticking it close – inside of 5 feet on a hole that only gave up four birdies during the final round – Rickie only needed one putt to win the playoff and secure his first career PGA Tour victory.

Check out the video above to hear what Rickie had to say about this shot and stay tuned to Team Titleist as we’ll be sharing more 2012 highlights from Titleist Brand Ambassadors and golf ball loyalists in the coming days.

In the meantime, feel free to share your best or most memorable shot you’ve hit this year in the comments below or on the discussion boards.

Rory McIlroy Wins Race to Dubai Trusting Titleist From Tee-To-Green

With a flair for the dramatic that has become a hallmark for the the No. 1 player in the world, Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy put an exclamation point on an historic season on Sunday, closing with five consecutive birdies to capture the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship. At the same time, momentum continued to swell for Titleist’s seeding and tour validation process for the new Pro V1 and Pro V1x prototype golf balls, as Luke Donald and Louis Oosthuizen each posted top-5 finishes in Dubai playing the new Pro V1x prototype golf ball.

McIlroy fired a final round 6-under 66 in Dubai, good for a 23-under 265 total and a 2-shot margin of victory. The performance also gave him the solo spotlight at the closing award ceremony, where McIlroy hoisted two trophies – one for the DP World Championship victory and one to commemorate his triumph in the season-long Race to Dubai, a title he wrapped up two weeks ago.

“I said I wanted to win both trophies this week and that is exactly what I’ve managed to do,” McIlroy said after the win. “I knew I needed to do something special over the closing few holes. I really couldn’t have wished for a better ending.”

McIlroy’s fireworks in the desert highlighted three wins on the week for Titleist players across the worldwide professional tours, including a victory by Pro V1x loyalist Jake Roos, who won the inaugural Cape Town Open on the South African Sunshine Tour.6787.worldwide 5F00 112512 Rory McIlroy Wins Race to Dubai Trusting Titleist From Tee To Green

EUROPEAN: McIlroy entered the final round tied for the lead with World No. 2 Luke Donald, who won the Dunlop Phoenix in Japan last week playing the new Titleist Pro V1x prototype golf ball for the first time in competition. Donald tied for third place after closing with a one under 71, posting his second consecutive top three finish with the new golf ball. Louis Oosthuizen, playing the new Titleist Pro V1x prototype golf ball this week for the first time, finished solo fifth, another shot back.

The victory was the fifth of the year for McIlroy and the 10th of his professional career. Among his victories this season was his second major in as many years – the PGA Championship – which he won by eight shots. He also became just the second player to capture the money title on both the U.S. PGA and European Tours, a feat first achieved by Luke Donald last year. McIlroy is the first player since Pro V1x loyalist Lee Westwood in 2009 to win The Race to Dubai and the DP World Tour Championship in the same year.

“I could not have wished for any better,” said McIlroy.  “To back up 2011 with another major and to be part of an unbelievable story at the Ryder Cup has made it an incredible year.”

“I’ve grown up watching the (Australian) Masters since I was a kid, so this has been somewhat a long time coming,” Scott said during the trophy ceremony.

“This is a pretty sweet today to be in the gold jacket and to hold this trophy which I’ve been admiring since I was just a kid.”

Scott’s final-round rally capped off a 17-under par 271 total that was good enough to top Pro V1x loyalist and Australian Masters defending champion Ian Poulter, who finished in second place.

This was the third tournament that Scott played the new Pro V1 prototype and he shared some of his feedback with the team earlier in the week.

“I put the new Pro V1 in play starting at HSBC and the Singapore Open. I’ve found it a very easy fit into my game and I’ve been very happy with the results,” Scott said. “I’ve played well.”
