The lure: Within easy reach of the natural splendor of Bryce Canyon and Zion national parks, this active-adult community lures those who love the great outdoors. In southern Utah, it has commanding views of mountains and red rock formations. The 18-hole golf course skirts the Virgin River. A clubhouse with a restaurant opens this year. A large community center is the setting for luaus, wine tastings, a variety of classes and fitness facilities with personalized programs. There are indoor and outdoor pools and tennis courts.

What residents say: After five years of looking from Florida to Nevada for a place to retire, Carl Berger, 71, and his wife, Shari, 69, discovered SunRiver St. George. "It has wonderful activities and active people," he says. "We love the air quality and the Climate." Formerly from Michigan, he says they've found a quick camaraderie among residents similar to when they first married and moved to a new place. "A lot of people are moving here from all over and all for the same reasons," he says.
